If you're looking for a Midwest city with a large Korean community, it's hard to leave out Chicago. Chicago has had a large, well-established Korean community for decades, and it's still one of the better cities to meet Koreans in Illinois and the broader Midwest.
But there's a gap between what newcomers to Chicago expect and how Korean life is actually distributed. Koreans aren't all clustered in Downtown Chicago or a single "Koreatown" — the community spreads widely across the North Shore and suburbs, through Glenview, Northbrook, Niles, Skokie, and Schaumburg.
Add to that Korean international and grad students at Northwestern University, University of Chicago, UIC, and Loyola University Chicago, professionals working Downtown, and long-settled Korean-Americans. So while Chicago clearly has a lot of Koreans, plenty of people say meeting someone new isn't as easy as it sounds.
Where do Koreans in Chicago actually live?
Search for Chicago's Korean community and Glenview and Northbrook come up constantly.
These areas have Korean restaurants, grocery stores, churches, and a range of Korean-owned businesses, making the Korean community relatively easy to access. Niles and Skokie also have large Korean populations.
Further west, there are Korean professionals living or working around Schaumburg.
Meanwhile, younger professionals in their 20s and 30s often prefer city living — Downtown Chicago, River North, West Loop, Lincoln Park.
So even though everyone might identify as "Chicago Korean," daily life can look quite different.
Someone living car-free Downtown and someone driving around Glenview have completely different weekday and weekend routines.
If you're a student at Northwestern or UChicago
Chicago is also a major college town.
Northwestern University is in Evanston, close to the North Shore living area; University of Chicago is in Hyde Park.
UIC is close to Downtown, and Loyola University Chicago has Korean students too.
If you're an international or exchange student, your school's Korean student association is one of the easiest ways to meet new people.
Try searching your school's name plus "Korean Student Association" — Northwestern KSA, Northwestern Korean Students, UChicago Korean Student Association, UIC KSA, Loyola Chicago Korean Students.
If you're a Northwestern student living in Evanston, in particular, both Downtown Chicago and North Shore areas like Glenview or Skokie are within a fairly comfortable range. While you're in school, classes, clubs, and friends naturally create chances to meet new people.
But once you graduate and start working, that community disappears, and new chances to meet people can shrink fast.
Downtown professionals and suburban Koreans live pretty differently
In Chicago dating, where someone actually lives matters more than you'd think.
One person might work in West Loop and live Downtown, while the other lives in Glenview or Northbrook.
Someone working at a company near Schaumburg might spend most of their time in the northwest suburbs rather than Downtown.
Chicago has solid public transit, but once you factor in the suburbs, a car often becomes necessary.
So "we both live in Illinois" or "we're both in the Chicago area" doesn't automatically mean a convenient match.
It's worth actually thinking through the commute — Chicago Downtown to Evanston, Evanston to Glenview, Downtown to Schaumburg.
This gap feels especially real when you're trying to plan a weeknight date after work.
Where do people in Chicago actually meet Koreans?
With such a long-established Korean community, there are a lot of ways to meet people.
Some meet through young-adult groups or professional groups at Korean churches around Glenview and Northbrook, or through friend introductions.
Downtown, people also meet through interest-based groups — running, fitness, hobbies.
Dating apps like Hinge and Bumble are commonly used too.
But after living in the same area for a few years, friend introductions start to hit a ceiling.
Within the Korean community, mutual connections tend to overlap, and dating a coworker can feel awkward.
Dating apps show you plenty of people, but you have to find out for yourself whether someone wants something casual or is actually looking for something long-term.
If you're specifically looking for something serious with a Korean or Korean-American in Chicago, your options can narrow faster than you'd expect.
In the Midwest, people sometimes widen their search to other states
Another thing about Chicago: it's the hub city of the Midwest.
Beyond Illinois, there are Korean students and professionals in nearby Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan too.
If you live in Madison or Milwaukee, Wisconsin, or a college town in Indiana, widening your search to Chicago — rather than looking only within your own area — can meaningfully increase your options.
Conversely, someone in Chicago who's open to long distance can widen their search to other parts of the Midwest too.
Since Korean population varies so much by region in the US, how far you're willing to go matters more than you'd think.
