Man using a dating app on his phone

In an earlier post, we compared Korean American dating apps overall, and mentioned Hinge fairly positively. That got a lot of readers asking, "Okay, but what's it actually like?"

So this time, a Neorang team member installed Hinge and used it for real over the course of several days. Here's an honest look at what stood out from a Korean American's perspective.

What Is Hinge, Exactly?

Hinge launched in 2012 and is now one of the most widely used dating apps in the US, alongside Tinder. True to its slogan — "the dating app designed to be deleted" — it's built for people looking for something serious.

Where Tinder is built around swiping through photos, Hinge works by letting you like or comment directly on a specific photo or prompt answer in someone's profile. Because of that structure, conversations tend to start with some actual context, which makes the whole thing feel more natural.

Setting Up a Profile — Prompts Are Everything

What sets a Hinge profile apart from photos alone is the "Prompts" section — a set of question-and-answer pairs. You pick three from a list ("My go-to karaoke song," "The way to win me over is," "I'll know it's time to delete this app when") and write short answers.

Using it firsthand, the prompts mattered a lot more than expected. Sending a like based on a photo alone rarely led anywhere interesting — but opening a conversation by reacting to or asking about someone's prompt answer led to noticeably more natural first exchanges.

Most Korean users' profiles were written in English, with some mixing in Korean here and there. Profiles written entirely in Korean were rare. If you're using Hinge in the US, it's safe to assume an English-language profile is the default expectation.

The Like System — Limits for Free Users

Hinge's free tier caps how many likes you can send per day. Paid plans (Hinge+, HingeX) remove that cap and add features like seeing everyone who's liked you.

If you're only using the free version, you'll likely run through your daily likes fairly quickly. Using it seriously tends to mean considering a paid plan, and the monthly subscription isn't exactly cheap.

Swiping on a dating app

It Really Depends on Where You Live — LA vs. NYC

The biggest variable with Hinge is location. Using it in LA (specifically around Koreatown), Korean users showed up pretty regularly. In areas with a smaller Korean population, Korean profiles were much harder to find.

New York has a lower Korean density than LA, but the city's overall diversity means a higher chance of meeting people from a wide range of backgrounds. Setting your location around Korean-heavy pockets like Flushing or Fort Lee tended to surface more Korean profiles.

Ultimately, how well Hinge works for you depends heavily on where you live and how many active users are nearby. If you're Korean and live outside a major city, Hinge alone may not be enough to meet other Koreans.

Our Honest Take

Of the dating apps out there, we think Hinge is the best fit for people who genuinely want something serious. The conversation-first structure, rather than photo-swiping, is a real strength — and a well-written set of prompts makes it much easier for someone to reach out.

That said, if your goal is specifically to meet other Koreans, Hinge still has real limitations. The size of the Korean user base varies a lot by city, and there's no easy way to filter for Korean users from the start. Even if you keep using Hinge, pairing it with a Korean-focused matchmaking service can be a more efficient approach.

Neorang Is a Good Fit If This Sounds Familiar

A lot of people have used dating apps for a while and feel like it just isn't turning into anything serious. We hear this often: matches happen, but conversations fizzle out fast, or it's hard to get to an actual first date, or it's difficult to find someone who's genuinely thinking about marriage.

Neorang is a matchmaking service for Koreans living across the US. Instead of swiping on your own like an app, a dedicated matchmaker personally selects and introduces your matches — and we handle member verification ourselves. If you're seriously looking for a partner, we'd love to talk.
